Instructor Info Sheet - 2018-19

Instructor Expectations:
1.       Before the Ice Time
-          Read through the ice plan and the email summary outlining the upcoming ice, know your ice location, time
and drills – ice plan and summary email should be sent to you 1 day before the ice time and include your
           contact for the ice time
-          Know the names of the goalies and the coaches/contacts
-          Understand the ice plan, and contact Keely(keely@ringettegoalies.com) and Heather
(heather@ringettegoalies.com) before the ice time if anything is unclear
-          Bring your 5-Count Instructor track suit, drill outline and ice plan and other supplies if needed (white board,
white board markers, helmet, whistle, pen, sharpie, skates, lower half equipment, player stick, goalie stick,
goalie gloves, players gloves) - rings if it’s a group session, photocopies if Come See How session
2.       Ice Time
-          Plan to arrive at arena a half hour before the ice time (helps allow for last minute weather issues)
-          Be ready to go on the ice 5 minutes before ice starts
-          Help set up nets and distribute rings at start of ice time
-          Close bench doors before starting drills
-          No gum, cell phones, hanging out and chatting with other instructors while on the ice and/or in front of the
kids and/or parents and/or coaches – especially if you know a coach or shooters– make sure you’re there
           for the goalies
-          Learn names as quickly as possible – use their names, ask quickly if you forget their name
-          Smile, make eye contact and be friendly towards the parents when off the ice
-          Engage the kids off the ice too, smile and say hi, try to use their name
-          Make sure goalies rest on their knee on the ice, not on their bum or stomachs
-          Knock before entering dressing room to get the all clear, refrain from putting yourself into a position of
talking with goalies 1 on 1 alone in a room
-          Note: Helmets are mandatory on the ice

3.       After Ice Time
-          Send an email to Keely and Heather with 2 or 3 tips/reminders/comments for each goalie and any issues or
thoughts following the ice time (skills they might want to work on next time, ice time was shorter or longer
than anticipated, comments from coaches) –standard email template
-          Also include in your email any changes to the drills and ice plan you ran (didn’t get to a drill, modified or
changed a drill) and any overall comments about how the ice went
-          If you are the Lead for the ice time, also include in your email any changes to the overall ice plan (didn’t get
to a drill, modified or changed a drill, couldn’t get shooters for second half)

Drill Tips:
-          Know your drill – how it’s to be run, the individual skills we’re trying to teach so things are taught
consistently, how to break it down for the goalie, ask Keely and Heather ahead of time if any confusion
-          Be aware of your time for the drill so each goalie gets enough time in the net (depending on number of
goalies, each goalie may not get too much time in net)
-          Keep all goalies in the group as active as possible – either as passers or doing pylons
-          Positive feedback as much as possible, even if it’s just tiny things – compliment what they do well, provide
           constant dialogue
-          Ask if they understand what you’re trying to get them to change or work on
-          Show them a good example and a bad example of what you want so they can see the difference
-          Manage your shooters – up to you to make sure they shoot exactly how and where you want them to
shoot from – take charge of your drill, and thank the shooters after for their help
-          Try to work the drill from both sides if you have time

Instructor Info for 5-Count:
-          Payment will be by cheque at the end of each month, please fill out an invoice, email the invoice to Keely
and Heather by the end of the month in exchange for your cheque
