Ashley Steele - Richmond Hill Lightning, NRL
February 2, 2010

Picture
Name - Ashley Steele

I started playing ringette when I was 6 years old, after seeing a promotional booth set up in a mall. I started playing as a defence, then when I was about 9 I strapped on the pads and decided to play a game in net. After that game I became a part time goalie on our team, and by the end of the year I was in net every game. I've played with the Burlington Ringette Association in Southern Ontario for the majority of my playing career. In 2005/2006 I played on the Southern Ontario AAA team, and then again in the 2007/2008 season (winning silver at Ontario Winter Games). In 2009, I was a part of the Canada Polar Bear team, touring Finland, Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic to showcase the sport. Also in 2009, I was drafted to the Richmond Hill Lightning, and still play there today.

I have recently become one of the instructors for the National Ringette School, and I also help out with the clinics run by the Richmond Hill NRL team as well as the Come Try Ringette promotions.

Number - 1

Years played Ringette - 14 years

Current Ringette team/last team played for – Richmond Hill Lightning NRL

Favourite part of being a Ringette Goalie – I love the crowds reaction when a big save is made. I like overtime and shootouts too (the pressure and the suspense).

School or Job Description - I attend Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, studying Kinesiology

Book you’re reading right now – House Rules by Jodi Picoult

Best gift received – In my rookie year with the lightning a sponsor bought the other goalie and myself new sets of pads, chest protectors and gloves.

Favorite Holiday -  Halloween

Favorite Ice Cream flavor -  Superkid, sometime I still act like I’m 7

Favorite Junk food – Ketchup Chips

Life Lesson -  “Don’t sweat the small stuff, and everything’s the small stuff.”

“It’s a long way from your heart.”

Favorite Movie – The Mighty Ducks

Nickname -  Steele

Trickiest player to play against -  Julie Blanchette from the Montreal Mission. She always seems to be in the right place at the right time, and is a threat from anywhere on the ice.

Pet Peeve – I hate people who have no respect for themselves or anyone else.

Question: If you weren’t a Ringette Goalie, what would you be? -  Probably a Hockey Goalie, or I would have focused on music more, rather then sports.

Favorite Actor/Actress – Vince Vaughn

Favorite band or artist - Sugarland

Other sports you play – Field Hockey, Ball Hockey

TV show you can’t miss –  The Big Bang Theory and How I met your mother

Unique characteristic –  In Ringette: like most goalies I have many pre-game rituals, unlike many goalies I love a high pressure game. Outside of Ringette: I laugh, a lot!

Vacation spot – My favourite vacation’s have been to Estonia and Greece. Most summer’s I go and visit family out in Alberta too. My ideal vacation would be taking a world cruise.

Summer activity - Every summer I play field hockey, as well as coach a house league team and I am the goalie coach for the regional goalies.

X-Rays (ever broken a bone) -  I had X-Rays on my knee a couple summers ago because I had a chipped meniscus, but I have never broken a bone.
